Meet Your Host: Lisa Russell
Lisa Russell started her journey as a humanitarian aid worker in Kosovo, where she witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of harmful storytelling on women affected by conflict. Growing up as a Asian American girl in an immigrant household, living below the poverty line, Lisa experienced the effects of limiting narratives herself.
Despite the hardships, she developed incredible creative thinking skills, which she credits for creating her unique career path driven by creativity and a desire to change systems of oppression.
Lisa's creativity and determination led her to excel in her career, wining an Emmy-award and place in the prestigious Academy Nicholl Screenwriting Contest. However, becoming an award-winning filmmaker was never her primary drive.
Lisa’s true passion lies in creating movements that uplift others, especially those on the margins of society. Over the past 20 years, she has built a career as a leading voice for diverse artists and creators in the UN space, using her work to advocate for representation and equity.
Now residing in Mombasa, Kenya, Lisa continues her work to amplify the voices of others, advocating for the growing creative economy. She serves as the Global Co-Chair of the Arts and Culture Working Group, is a SheDecides Global Champion, and holds board positions with FXB Young Climate Advocates and the African Council for Foreign Relations.
Lisa’s life mission is to use her privilege to ensure that diverse voices are heard, leading movements that challenge harmful narratives and empower marginalized communities
